Whether sitting or standing, practicing good posture can improve your overall health and well-being. Here are some important ways sitting up straight and standing tall can assist your mood and fitness.

  1. Stay healthy – Good posture decreases the wear and tear on your joints. This decreases the chances of arthritis. In addition, slouching could lead to slipped discs and other problems with the back, neck, and shoulders.
  2. Breathe easier – If your job or another circumstance requires you to stay seated for a long period of time, remember to take a break every hour or so. Stand up, walk around, and stretch. Maintain good posture when returning to your seat. This process expands the chest cavity and increases your oxygen intake by up to 30 percent. More oxygen equals better breathing which in turn helps us to relax.
  3. Reduces stress and fear – A recent study finds that good posture boosts your mood and lowers feeling of stress, fear, and other negative emotions.1
  4. Boosts your confidence – An Ohio State University study shows the individuals with good posture has higher levels of confidence and self-esteem.2
  5. Look fabulous – Standing up straight helps you look taller and 10 pounds thinner. In addition, good posture strengthens your core muscles and assists with your overall fitness.

In contrast, slouching makes you feel tired and less confident. Bad posture can also affect your mood, breathing, and wreck havoc on your joints and muscles. So throw those shoulders back and be mindful of your posture whether standing or sitting.
