The “Text Neck” Epidemic

Doctors are seeing more and more patients with head, neck, and back pain caused by bad posture while using mobile technology such as cell phones and tablets. This growing epidemic is being called “text neck” and can be seen in offices and on streets around the world. “Text Neck” can lead to pinched nerves, herniated disks, spine degeneration, and more.

 

Consider these numbers: your head weighs about 11 pounds. Tilting it forward by only 15 degrees can put 27 pounds of pressure on your spine. Depending on how far you lean over, you can put up to 60 pounds of pressure on your spine. Doing this for hours each day, 365 days a year is asking for trouble.

 

So what is the best solution? Keep your head up and your shoulders pulled back. Try to look at your mobile device by casting your eyes down instead of tilting your head or neck.
